sholio: a book and some gourds (Autumn-book & pumpkin)
Fall Festival Bingo at [community profile] allbingo, with prompt lists that you can use to generate your own bingo card at [personal profile] magistrate's bingo card generator.

Comfortween at [community profile] hurtcomfortex.

Whumptober! Which I suspect I probably won't manage to write much for, but you never know.

Other things - Autumn icons at [personal profile] delacourtings - technically from last year, but just in case your autumn icon bank needs to be refreshed. You could also look ahead to winter/Christmas icons too.

Yes, I really love fall.
sholio: Jack-o-lanterns (Halloween-jack-o-lanterns)
And a very October day too, cold and rainy, with most of the leaves gone from the trees.

October means:

- Inktober! I'll be posting them at my Instagram (and probably also on Tumblr, but with the instagram you just get the pictures and not the other stuff).

- Whumptober! I'll post the first of those snippets shortly. I've only written a few of them so far and have absolutely no doubt that I WILL fall behind eventually (I'll play catchup in November), but there are still quite a few prompts open and if you'd still like to claim one, you can do so here. (It's also okay to double-claim one - though I'd rather not have more than two claims on any given prompt - and claim a second one if you already did one. I have, by the way, done a bit of shuffling for people who gave me multiple options when the one I said I'd give them turned out to be harder to write than the other one.) I think unclaimed prompts will be either written by me for fun for whatever characters I would most like to write h/c about, or will be used as catchup days to work on the others.

Anyone who would like to join me in doing the prompt-claims thing at your own journal with your fandoms, or just writing snippets for the different prompts (or drawing, whatever your art form is) - PLEASE DO. The more the merrier!

Speaking of hurt/comfort, [personal profile] frith_in_thorns is hosting a delightful discussion about your favorite types of hurt in h/c.

- [personal profile] spook_me! For which I WILL have a fic this year; I actually finished the extremely rough draft of that last night. It's 22K of Ward's undead ghost dad tormenting him. >_> It may quite possibly be one of the most indulgent things I've written for this show, which is really saying something.

- Writing Rainbow: Orange! This is the October manifestation of the color-themed flash exchanges. Signups will open tonight and matching will be based on fandom and maybe on freeform tags (this part is still being decided) and the writing period is over the weekend. Tagset here, ask if questions; I mean, I'm not running it, but I've done several of the flash exchanges so I think I have a pretty good handle on how they work (with the caveat that it does change a little depending on who's running it) and will probably be doing this one, if that's an enticement!

ETA: Oh, and also, [community profile] fandomgiftbox is still filling needy giftboxes; you can see which giftboxes still need gifts here.
sholio: Autumn leaves (Autumn-leaves 1)
So I went a little wild adding new autumn icons from [livejournal.com profile] roxicons. I love autumn (even though it leads to winter), and I've been feeling the need for some new icons recently.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who goes to answer comments and bans/unfriends people by accidentally clicking on the pop-up. Hopefully not too many people have notifications turned on for that sort of thing, but, uh, if you ever get a notice that I've banned and then immediately unbanned you, or unfriended you and then friended you again, that's why.

*facepalm*

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] spook_me is happening again! HOW IS IT THAT TIME ALREADY. This is a fun, super-low-pressure Halloween ficathon. I've only ever managed to finish my story one time (and the story I wrote was Ghost in the Machine, which is NOT short, so it took me a year to actually finish it). I've been wanting to write a White Collar ghost story, but in 2011 I was trying to finish the horse farm story in October, and last year I was having a set of emotional issues which included kinda dropping out of fandom somewhat. But this year, THIS year I will not only sign up, but I will write that ghost story! You can sign up for original fiction as well as fanfic -- you pick a creature from the list, and then receive prompts, which this year are based on Tarot cards -- and the deadline (Oct. 26) is a loose guideline only. Signups are here.

[personal profile] arduinna suggested an Idyll Challenge, described as "a story in which the characters are stuck in a peaceful, comfortable, well-stocked place, usually with some kind of swimming available". And then went and created an Idyll Challenge Collection on AO3. There are no signups or anything; just write a story in any fandom that fits the above description and upload it. The deadline is Sept. 22, but it's flexible. (Still trying to figure out how I can get the White Collar characters into a situation like that without the FBI being 5 minutes behind them ...)
sholio: sun on winter trees (Autumn-berries)
Today was gorgeous, by Alaskan October standards -- sunny, in the 40s -- and probably one of the last nice days we'll have before it snows, so today was a "getting ready for winter" day. Cut for nattering about farm stuff )

Pumpkin!

sholio: slice of pie with ice cream and apples (Autumn-apple pie)
I had no idea pumpkin was so tasty as a vegetable! I grew pumpkins this year (the kind that are meant for cooking with) and I ended up with four good pumpkins; I gave one to my mom and kept three, and I cut up the ripest of these tonight. I made a pumpkin-coconut curry from a (heavily modified) recipe that I found on the Internet, and the rest of it, I cooked in the microwave for mashing and making pies and cookies. But I can't stop EATING IT. It's so tasty! It tastes just like a really sweet, flavorful butternut squash. I ended up saving a section of the uncooked pumpkin to cook for a vegetable later, and only mashed part of it, because it's so tasty all by itself that I hate to "waste" it by baking with it.

(Though I'm definitely looking forward to the pumpkin-chocolate chip cookies I plan to make later tonight from the mashed part. ♥ I have a two-quart baking dish that's almost completely full of mashed pumpkin, so it's not like I don't have enough of it ...)

I was going to make one of the remaining pumpkins into a jack-o-lantern, but I think I'm going to cook with both of them and buy a pumpkin for carving, because it seems like an awful waste not to eat every bit of them.

ETA: I plan to use this pumpkin cookie recipe (perhaps modified a bit, because my pumpkin puree is very moist). The pumpkin-coconut curry was based off this recipe, but I used a lot more vegetables than it called for, and left out the broth -- basically I made a chicken stir fry, then added a can of coconut milk and the cubed pumpkin, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Also, I used curry powder and powdered ginger. I was planning to add yogurt to thicken the sauce, but it turned out we were out of it. (I think I'm somehow incapable of following recipes as written. CAN'T BE DONE.)
