Obviously there is no way I could possibly have seen SGA 5x01...
You know, last year, when episodes leaked ahead of time, I tried to be the best I could possibly be (aside from not watching them, which would clearly have been beyond my willpower). I didn't post about them, didn't pass around links -- clamped down on all my fannish impulses, squeed quietly by myself and waited for the rest of the world to see them.
This year ... feh. I try to be a good fan, I really do; I buy the episodes on iTunes *and* on DVD; but I've been waiting months and it's not MY fault if they keep tempting me beyond endurance and ... I want to post about it, darn it!
Oh my show, my silly silly space show. I ♥ ♥ ♥ YOU SO MUCH.
Rodney delivered Teyla's baby. RODNEY DELIVERED TEYLA'S BABY. Sadly, I was spoiled for this just last night watching the 30-second preview. Had I only known! But I don't really care, because RODNEY DELIVERED TEYLA'S BABY. You know, if Mallozzi and Gero had come knocking on my door and had said, "Layla, what would you like to see in Season 5 of SGA that hasn't happened yet, no matter how unlikely?" ... aside from "realistic alien cultures", I would probably have said "Rodney delivering Teyla's baby". But I doubt if I'd even have bothered listing it on a Season 5 wishlist, because ... what are the odds of THAT happening?
Pretty good, apparently! And once again, I'm so pleased with how they've handled Teyla's whole pregnancy and, now, childbirth. They've kept her Teyla -- still capable and self-possessed and believably herself, even while delivering a baby on a hiveship. And I liked the childbirth scene -- okay, I did find myself trying really hard not to think about where the placenta got off to, but all in all, for a TV childbirth scene, it was at least passingly realistic and they kept Teyla in-character, which was what I was most worried about. None of my worst fears about the Teyla-baby storyline have come true; it was a (relatively) normal pregnancy and a (relatively) normal baby ("relatively"="by Stargate-verse standards") and they got baby AND mother back safe and sound! SQUEE!
And there was SO MUCH ELSE! All the Ronon-and-John-in-the-ruins stuff, their macho-ness and rough boy-affection and "stay with me!" and most of all their "last" stand ... and John's "McKay's alive?" to Keller with his heart in his eyes (because he hadn't even dared to ask when they rescued him about the fate of anyone in the ruins he cared about -- oh, John!) ... and FORD!!!!!! ... and John running around half-dead trying to rescue Teyla while the rest of his team tries to watch out for him (Rodney seeing right through him -- because his lousy people skills are only lousy with people who aren't John -- and Ronon's "You don't have to do everything yourself!" ♥) ... and Teyla so brave and trying so hard not to go into labor and knowing that her team would come for her ... and naming her baby after John ... and Rodney bringing Teyla the world's dorkiest bouquet of flowers ...
... and, uh, I just realized, in enumerating my squee, that we never saw what happened to Kanaan. Er. What? Last we saw, he was showing the team to safety and then ... nothing. Um. That's, er, kind of a major loose end there. I can't help thinking there should have been another scene that got cut. There were lots and lots of places where it would have been nice to have a little bit more, but nowhere else that was plot-critical in quite that way.
(Also, didn't the name of Teyla's father used to be Tagan?)
*distacts self with squee* JOHN WITH CUDDLY BABY AND DOPEY "I HAVE A BABY" EXPRESSION. DESERVES CAPSLOCK. OMG.
Anyway.
This episode was total FANFIC, all the way. And unabashedly space-opera enough that I really didn't care about nitpicky plot details such as two USAF colonels letting an injured soldier and two mildly injured civilians single-handedly pull off a rescue operation when they have a whole ship full of uninjured, trained soldiers whose job it is to do that stuff. I mean, really, IT MAKES NO SENSE but I'm so easy -- I don't care as long there are awesome space explosions (the hyperdrive window winking out when they shot Michael's ship made me gasp! I love f/x that surprise me) and John being self-sacrificing and Rodney delivering a baby and TEAMY TEAM all over the place. And cute baby! Baby with Rodney! And baby with John! Why does guy+cute baby never get old? The only thing we didn't really get was Ronon+cute baby, but he got to carry Teyla+cute baby around for awhile, so I guess it all evens out.

I just about died when I saw Ford in the opening (what a nice surprise, really), and proceeded to flail incoherently in the dining room where I've set up my laptop.
and Rodney bringing Teyla the world's dorkiest bouquet of flowers
They were so adorkably cute that I wished I was fictional so I could hug him!
JOHN'S "I HAVE A BABY" EXPRESSION ALSO KILLED ME DED. His expression when he walked in and saw his "nephew" for the first time. And Rodney's expression after the hi-larious "OH GOD THIS IS GROSS!" face -- and OMG Ronon's face/gentle "are you okay?" touch and... that was quite a loaded scene, come to think of it.
Ronon's soft squeeze to Teyla's shoulder before he and John went to go blow things up was absolutely adorable, as well as the stern "look after her" to McKay. God, I want more Ronon and Teyla scenes, because those two are so awesome together. And Micheal has Wikipedia and, and...
I think "SQUEE!" is much more succinct. I'm going to have to go watch it again.

Ford in the opening was a total shock! I had no idea they'd gotten Rainbow to do a scene! It makes me wonder if we might see him again this season. I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be awesome if it did happen. And I also loved the continuity of Ford's loss continuing to be felt, by Sheppard at least, in the present day.
And Teyla and Ronon -- yes! I really fell for them in season 2, as surrogate-siblings or as a couple (I could happily have gone either way) and I always adore their interaction.
... I think need to go watch again.

And yes, it's such a lovely piece of fanfiction brought to screen, my eyes got rounder and rounder with every scene I watched. Man, I *love* this show. :-)

This is a ramble..please excuse:
so many YESs to what you said!!! This is more than I could have ever wished for!
It really was fanfic, wasn't it???????
I loved the Ronon and John stuff. Ronon wouldn't leave..John's barely hanging on towards the end there. The Ronon and John knowing they are about to go out shooting moment killed me DEAD!
Oh and John's "McKay's alive?" was so full of hope and relief!
Loved Sam's take charge. Look how far we've come with Caldwell who bitched a LOT about risking his ship for Ronon or John before and risked it TWICE to save Ronon and John then Teyla.
Loved, the John and Keller scene! OMG I died! His desperation to go on, basically begging her to let him. Plus he was breathing hard and fast through the pain. And FORD!!! You know for before.
The Jumper scene where Rodney and Ronon do their silent communication thing about John's health.
Rodney's speech about kidney stones and his CAT! Also loved how he just ignored Lorne broken leg earlier.
Um..what else...Ronon's 'you don't have to do everything" comment.
Rodney delivered Teyla's baby.
John's half dead!
Oh...um, Teyla was TEYAL. Holding on..being strong, never giving up!
The baby and the dart.
Oh the end where she names the baby after her father and John. Oh and the T/J shippers wll go nuts at that opening scene. As will the McKay/John shipper as John's happiness over Rodney being alive.
And it was filled with TEAM.
I'm so sorry for being so...um.....yeah. Brain is dead.
God this was pure fan goodness and yes screw logic.
I LOVED THIS

If we have to sacrify a certain amount of logic in order to get this kind of episode, of TEAM, of *everything* then yesyesyes - screw logic. *g*

*snorts* Sense is not generally in high supply in the Stargate Atlantis braintrust. They pick an idea they think is 'cool' and run with it.
This was a cool idea.
YAY FOR TEAM!
It may not have been the most watertight of episodes, but I enjoyed it from beginning to end - even the bits that annoyed me.
Incidentally, Teyla introduces herself as "Teyla, daughter of Tegan". But no-one among the Athosians ever says that her father's name was Tegan. It is entirely possible that her mother's name was Tegan, and her father's name is Torin.
*flails*
no subject
*flails a bit* Okay, I LOVE this, so much that it is now personal canon for me. And it, uh, actually makes sense -- much like the midriff-baring shirts that actually aren't midriff-baring with non-Atlantean pants; it may or may not be what the writers originally intended -- I'm leaning towards "or not" -- but is considerably more plausible than any canonical explanation they might have had in mind. I also just realized that they've never specifically said that she's the Athosians' leader (or, at any rate, spokesperson) because her father had that position ... have they? The fandom generally assumes it, but (at least based on what's explicitly stated in canon) it could just as easily be passed down from her mother, or be a merit-based position.

1. John and Ronon: BFFs!
2. Rodney + Baby = Awww!
3. John + Baby = AWWWWWW! That actually did make my ovaries go ping.
no subject
I must admit that people talking about exploding ovaries generally makes me cringe, because, colorful metaphor or not, ouch. But that scene with John and the baby in the dart actually kinda made me get what they're talking about.
So many lovely scenes with pretty much everybody! I have a whole boatload of nitpicks, really, but I will happily forgive it all for the utter squee.
no subject
I loved the ep - it was really exciting and crackatastic - the birth scene, the John Sheppard walking out of hospital despite major injury requiring blood transfusion and the team in action saving Teyla!!!!
no subject
New rule for season 5: every male cast member must hold the baby at least once per episode. (Yes, even Woolsey. XD )
And, yes, so much crack. Only on TV, really. Whatever Keller gave John must have been pretty strong stuff!
no subject
OMG, NO clue about Ford! That surprised me. Sad that Sam is leaving, because, really, she stuck up for 'The Team' a hell of a lot and knows all about team dynamics. I can't believe Michael stole the puddlejumper! And a huge show of how out of it John was that he DIDN'T think of escaping the hive ship by dart! I mean, come on! He's done it before!!
Also loved Caldwell basically doing what was asked of him and putting his ship and neck out for the team. He's 100X's better than Ellis!! Though, one mistake, I would think they'd want to KEEP the dart, so why tell Sheppard to land on the planet and leave it? I'm going to assume that they took Kannan out with them.
As for John walking about bleeding all over .... OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!! The fanfic writes itself!!!!!!!!!!! (oh, I sure hope there's lots on this, really). Because the WHUMP! JOHN! I mean, rebar through his side, bleeding all over, obviously fading in strength, because that last attempt by Ronon to lift the beam, John basically didn't put any attempt at it, like he just didn't have it. And yea, oh my, how I wanted that scene longer between Keller and John.. because, she must have given him something, morphine? lots of something!! And, how he managed to convince her??!! He was able to get up and move, though wasn't fooling ANYONE. Oh, the pain tolerance is so NOT a myth.
re: the baby name - In looking at the spelling in the credits, I think it's really a combination of her dad (Tagan) and boyfriend (Kannan). I checked, because I have a nephew named Torin, but they spelled it way differently. (but now because its late and I forgot to write it down.. my mind is failing). I could have done without 'John' as the middle name. Eh, but that's me. I would rather have had some combination of ALL of their names (Ronon, John & Rodney) rather than just John's. It's not like the other two had stopped searching for her
no subject
I can't believe Michael stole the puddlejumper!
... okay, I just had a very alarming thought here. Could Michael have the ATA gene now? He did, after all, have clone-Carson in his clutches for a season and a half, and I can't really think of any other way he could have accomplished that, at least in such a short time. (Well ... I guess they could also have used the Wraith version of a forklift to push the jumper off the edge of the platform where it was parked. That would be a very embarrassing way to lose a jumper.)
Oh, the pain tolerance is so NOT a myth.
Heh. I'd always been one of those who maintained that it *was* mostly fanon, but I'd say there's some pretty heavy canon support now!
I could have done without 'John' as the middle name.
I could have done without a middle name. XD One of my ethnographic nitpicks for the episode is Teyla's adopting of the English/British custom of a three-part name without any sort of explanation -- I mean, I can certainly believe that Teyla is honoring John by using his people's naming conventions for her baby, but I'm kinda bothered by the implicit "why yes, everyone has three names!" assumption of that part of the episode ... when many people on Earth have one, or two, and many have more than three -- but, yes. Nitpick most unbecoming.
It doesn't seem that out of place to me, though, for her to name the baby after John, because I definitely think that among the Lanteans, John is by far the one she's closest to, and it especially makes sense when she's obviously using Lantean-style baby-naming. Plus, he's the leader of the team -- though I would have liked to have seen everyone in the team recognized in that way, I think to some extent, by honoring John she's honoring the whole group of them.
no subject
We're very very curious what the hey happened to Kanaan. He's got to be okay, because if he died Teyla would've named the kid after him, no? I so want him to stay on Atlantis as stay-at-home dad, as we never see on TV...
FORD! That was - okay, I am living with Spoiler Central, and they have kept an absolute lid on that -
John trying to tell Ronon to leave him - "Would you leave me?" "Yes, I would" and we all shrieked with laughter. And OH his "McKay's alive?" And John staggering around dying...he really really should've stayed with the jumper (which Michael stole, right? with ATA gene from Carson?) I love the way Ronon completely doesn't obey him ever at all. John, you are the worst commander ever, in terms of actually commanding!
And Rodney caught the baby!!!1111!!!!
no subject
The whole episode was ... it was fanfic, damn it all! John running around hopped up on painkillers or stimulants or whatever Keller gave him (because obviously she gave him *something*; you can't go from horizontal to vertical that quickly otherwise) -- I believe I've read that fanfic. Multiple times. *g* And, yeah, John's actual track record at having people around him obey his orders is ... rather low. On the other hand, he seems to return the favor by not obeying orders himself!

I'd seen some pics of the boys being all dusty and bleeding (and hot) and I was eagerly anticipating some whump and h/c, but we got lots and lots of it! My fannish cup runneth over ;-P
And the guys holding the baby! Melted me righ down to a puddle of goo, especially the dart scene. I was all "well, they could take a dart now but they cannot possibly even think of beaming the baby!" Perfect solution, and I didn't even think about it! (also, cleanest, most silent new-born ever! perfect for sneaking around undetected X-D)
And yay for Ford!continuity! I kinda hope they never tell us what really happened to him. Soldiers do go MIA and though you suspect, you can never be sure. But he can pop up in hallucinations and dreams all he wants *nods*
So, Michael's probably on the cloacked jumper while his ship blows up, and Kannan is... hum... well, they'll certainly tell us next episode, right? They wouldn't just sweep that character under a rug and never talk of him again, right? RIGHT?
no subject
I really, really hope we get some continuity with Kannan's fate. Sora in the dungeon was bad enough, but at least she didn't just vanish halfway through the fight, never to be seen again ...!

It would be really refreshing if they address the storyline of a working mother with a young baby and the team actually trying to help.
no subject
Oh man! Seconded! I don't know how to express how happy the Teyla storyline has made me -- they *have* played up the "special baby" thing a little more than I'd like, but so far that seems to be mostly in Michael's crazy brain and not anything to do with the actual baby, and I'm really hoping it stays that way. In the beginning, I was entirely afraid that they were aiming for some kind of "monster baby" storyline; then, at the end of last season, I was so sure we were going to end up with the "stolen baby/team searches for baby" thing. PLEASE NO. I'm completely thrilled that they got back both mother and baby unharmed, and even if they do end up writing the baby out somehow over the course of the season (which wouldn't surprise me) I'm looking forward to a little bit of adjustment-time and more dealing with Teyla settling into her new role as working mother.

Quite possibly the best damn episode of SGA ever with so much teamyness and luff and GODDAMN FANFIC COME TO LIFE! In the best possible way. :D
P.S. Also (word to the awesome FX - the hyperspace window dissipating ROCKED and what about that incredble long FX pull-back from the ruined building to Michael's ship?!)
P.P.S. Also - macho John out to save his team despite terrible injury! *dies and goes to fanfic-made-canon heaven!* :D :D :D :D :D

Think my only quibble is that if John required a blood transfusion and HAD to have surgery, then how the hell did he walk out of the infirmary, and better yet, why did Keller let him? I'm still thumping my head on keyboard trying to figure out the injury. Could just be a hole in his side, but why would it take a few hours to repair? Hmm, I consult with a surgeon.
no subject
... no, seriously, I wondered the same thing. She had to have shot him up with some pretty heavy drugs to go from being horizontal to vertical so quickly -- it's awfully satisfying on a fannish level, but wow, she probably ought to have a medical board take away her license!
The only thing that allows me to explain it away (to myself) is how massively inconsistent and unpredictable the human body is with its response to trauma. There have been cases of people shot in the head who didn't even realize they'd been shot until later because the bullet didn't damage anything vital (I'm sure their doctors would have argued about them walking around if they'd known!) and people who survived thousand-foot falls or weeks without water or other things the human body is not supposed to be able to handle. Maybe he was going into shock and she gave him some saline and he came back out of it; maybe she was basically playing it safe with her diagnosis (she seemed to be mostly basing her medical opinion on an external exam, after all) and didn't want him running around until she could rule out internal injuries. So I *can* believe it, kinda, but I think I would've believed it a lot more if he'd collapsed at the end of it all, or if she'd been a little more worried and fretful-looking in the final infirmary scene.

I loved lots of it, including the Ronon and John trapped scene, Rodney and Lorne scene to, to all of the scenes!!
RODNEY DELIVERS THE BABY - and just how I'd imagined it too!! Fan squee!!!
And yeah, aww at his face, and John's in the dart, with baby.
And, and, and...oh, I can't!! There's just SO MUCH here that I loved!!
Poor Sam though, not a nice way to find out she's been removed from command.
I wished Amanda could have stayed, but hey, I can understand her wanting to go with Sanctuary.
Still, Woolsey...that should be sooo good! Conflict? Oh yes!!
Bakc to squeeing over the episode...special effects, team caring...Rodney!!
no subject
But, if they've had Michael escape some other way, I'll be fine.
I so loved the childbirth scene. Rodney was just so... Rodney, and Teyla was great.
And yes, Teyla introduced herself as "Teyla, daughter of Tagan", so where the hell Toron came it, I don't know. I wish the SGA writers would keep old copies of their scripts around if they can't be buggered to ever rewatch their own show and keep their canon straight.
I'm sorry but I winced when she named the baby after John. Pure fanfic.
Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the episode, and now I'm completely spoiler-free, so that makes me very happy.
I would imagine that we'll see that Teyla's ugly baby daddy is locked up in isolation. There's no way they could have allowed him in the main infirmary.
no subject
But... he's had a Carson clone (who has the ATA gene - and who has all the knowledge about the ATA gene therapy!) captive for over a year and has spent all that time monkeying around with genetics - his own included. What if he does now have the ATA gene?!! :/
(no subject)
no subject
I actually watched this on Sunday morning with a friend (
Have to admit that
I also ADORED the scenes with Lorne and Rodney. IMHO, those were some of the most perfect in the show. "We're fine. Oh, Lorne's got a broken leg." And Keller's comment that if McKay's not seeking medical help, then she's really worried - but he's still tells her to look after Lorne. I love the way the wonderful TEAMNESS of the Atlanteans really does extend beyond the Dorktastic Four (who were dorktastically awesome beyond all expections in this ep too).
I've avoided so many spoilers, so even the opening credits were cool revelations for me. Robert Picardo and Jewel Staite in regular cast? Awesome!
And speaking of Jewel Staite and me not being into spoilers, as I said, she was at the SupaNova con that I went to on the weekend and A) she's bright and warm and has rather devilish sense of humour and B) while she was quite circumspect, she did allude to some spoilers in the upcoming season which despite my non-shippiness and my aversion to "love triangles" I am really interested to see. The hints she dropped about it (and her reassurance that it was "definitely NOT like a soap opera") gave great hope for some of the upcoming character interactions.
SQUEEEEE!!!!!!

I've actually been very pleasantly surprised at how the show has been handling romance so far. For a show that's written by all-guys, and guys who are sort of notorious for *not* doing very well with female characters, I've been delighted -- they've done a really nice job with Teyla's pregnancy/childbirth *and* with Rodney's relationships with Katie and Keller in season 4. I'm sort of ... cautiously optimistic that whatever they do in season 5 will be well handled.
