Fanvid: Defenders - Welcome to New York

This was intended to be my Defenders dance-party/fandom-recruitment vid at last spring's fan con in Seattle. You know what didn't work out about that? *waves hand vaguely at world* EVERYTHING.

I stopped working on it when everything went to hell in March, then ended up slamming out a version of it for the Con-Solation vid party on Discord, but was never really happy with some of the clip choices, and I've been tinkering with it and poking at things all summer long. By this point I haven't done anything new to it in months and I figure it's about as done as it's going to get.

So I present to you: Defenders: Welcome to New York. A tribute to 5 years of the Netflix Defenders universe.

This New Yorker, coming to you live from the East Village, says: great vid, especially the use of Jessica's final scene as the ending. But it made me cry, partly the way both Jessica's and Luke's stories ended, and partly all the empty storefronts I'm passing now and all the articles about people leaving the city in droves. Maybe rents'll come down some and the creative energy that's been driven out by money will return. We've been down before. Good lord -- the bars have been closed for months, and I'm just trying to imagine how Jess would cope!

I keep hoping this for Seattle, but the small businesses keep closing and the rent (our rent at least) isn't going down. I felt a lot of nostalgia too.

OMG, POOR JESSICA. Maybe she could learn how to distill!

Not immediately. But I wonder if the long term effects will be positive. (Of course the people I know who have money are all concerned about their property keeping its value and I feel bad for them, but a lot of the young creative folks I know had to leave because rent.)

Liquor stores kept open, so she wouldn't have to go that far. ;-)

Thank you! ♥ But also, awwww. It does have a certain gut-punch now that it didn't have when I started it.

I hope that a population exodus will actually be good in the long run to relieve a little of the population/rent pressure and will mean that the people who stay are the ones who really want to be there.

Hahaha. Well, she seemed to do most of her drinking in her office anyway; maybe now she's keeping the liquor store down the street in business.

Here's hoping the fair-weather New Yorkers find someplace else and leave it to those of us who love the city and its history and its ups and downs, not their "luxury apartment" and brunch.

Liquor stores did booming business, that's for sure. I'm a very moderate drinker, but during the first few months of the lockdown, I must've had a glass or two of wine every night.

She probably tells them to leave it outside the door and is a giant tipper. Some website once listed all the brands of alcohol she drank on the show (it was quite a list), and most of it was GODAWFUL.

I suspect she's somehow punishing herself.

(Also, all the Trishica moments! AUGH)

*sniff* I wonder if Trish would have had her redemption if the series had continued?

SHE BETTER HAVE. Or they could have her escape, go full Hellcat, and then a redemption at the end, which would've paralleled season one with "I love you".... //SOB

Aww that last shot! And I loved all the parallel clips.

Thank you so much! It worked out very nicely that the final shot of Jess, which is also the last scene from the entire universe, makes a great closing shot for a vid with this theme; I really couldn't have planned it better.

Oh, I love this! The lyrics and energy are perfect for the story you're telling. I love the hugs, and all the Jeri and general inclusion of everyone, not just the main characters.

Thank you so much! <3 Yeah, one of the things I really love about that entire interwoven set of shows is the richness and depth of their world, and the way minor characters cross over between shows, so I wanted to capture that if at all possible.

Sometimes a song is just killer, and this is an excellent example of that. Well, and

sholio being really good at making vids. :)

I think it's really true IRL, too. For me, it was just moving here after college, and I even had an aunt in town. But my college friends didn't move here, and only one of my high school friends. He was in the middle of coming out, so his life was transforming quite a bit. And it's when I dropped "Cathy" for "Catherine" which was definitely a move towards being someone new.

Giving the last season of JJ a miss might be a good idea. It had a lot of good character moments, but the main plot was awful.

Yep, I've given it a miss for those reasons.

I miss them tooooo. (I don't think skipping the last season of JJ is a bad move, either...)
