It's interesting to me now to try to think of other instances of a sci-fi/fantasy character being significantly depowered and having it treated as a permanent disability - I mean, in a way that's actually addressed rather than handwaved. Breq in the Ancillary Justice books is the only one that's coming to mind - I'm sure there must be others, but everything else I can think off off the top of my head is temporary and gets reverted eventually, or else it's a fairly short-lived means of killing them off.
