Art talk
So, for starters, I have an Instagram now. I don't know what I'm actually going to do with it; as you can see, there's almost nothing there so far. My vague idea was that it'd function mainly as a promotion tool for my webcomic, but ... we'll see. I'll probably post Inktober art and that kind of thing. My biggest goal was just to get used to the Instagram interface since so many art and comics people use it now.
And a weird interface it is, too. Instagram only accepts square photos, auto-cropping anything that isn't square, which is really difficult to get used to. Though I have now discovered that my phone camera has a square mode, so I guess I'll be using that quite a bit. It also doesn't have a desktop browser mode (you have to upload things through the mobile interface, though I also found instructions for getting your browser to enter fake mobile mode so you can still do things from the desktop) and you also can't download your own pictures, which is bonkers! Who does that? Well, you can, but only by putting in a support ticket to get a temp link to download your entire photo archive as a package. Jeez.
Anyway, I'm trying to get back into art a little bit. For my birthday this year, I treated myself to an art-supply-of-the-month subscription. I went with 3 months of Paletteful Packs (it auto-renews on a monthly basis, but I figured I'd give it three months and cancel if I wasn't getting my money's worth out of it) and the Inktober box from Artsnacks, a different subscription service.
So far, the Paletteful subscription has been pretty disappointing. It's not their fault; the art supplies are really nice, and beautifully presented. It's just that they've been picking mainly things I don't use. Their boxes are themed, and it just so happens that the first two boxes in a row were pencil-themed boxes, which is a medium that a) I don't do much with, and b) I already have an entire tackle box containing a million art pencils left over from college. There have been a few things I like and feel that I'll get use out of (a pad of Bristol paper, a nice pencil sharpener) but on the whole, their selections haven't really been my thing.
I'm really hoping the third box will be something other than pencils. If I like it, I may stick it out for a couple more months, but I'm starting to think Paletteful's curation just isn't geared toward my tastes. They've been sending large pads of paper, for example, and while that's nice and I will probably use it, especially the Bristol paper, I would much rather have small sampler packs so I can try out some different things. Or just nice paper in little sketchbooks.
The Inktober box, on the other hand, is AMAZING. I mean, I'm easy for ink supplies anyway because that's my medium, but they also included a really fantastic-looking sketchbook and a big box of colored brush pens. I don't plan to touch any of it until October, but it's going to be hard to wait because I'm really eager to dive in. I'm going to see if I can manage to make this the year that I actually do all of the days. I'm also going to try to use the official prompts this year.
Speaking of October prompting, I discovered a delightful thing on Tumblr: Whumptober, a.k.a. a list of hurt/comfort prompts for each day of the month. Direct link to the prompt list (as an image). I don't know if I'll actually do anything with it, but it's marvelously inspiring. Come to think of it, I could combine it with Inktober andkill gently maim two birds with one stone...

I kinda hate it but it's at least only a SMALL tentacle of the Facebeast, and it's the one that allows me to keep up with family without having to either do the full Facebeast or allowing them anywhere near my . . .well. real online life. XD
....also I could totally Do Things with that Whumptober list. >.>

I love how every time I claw back some free time, I find something to fill it with. >___>

Oooer the prompting thing sounds like it might be fun; maybe I'll do that. I am tryyyyyying to get myself to write, because I am well aware that all the "reasons" my brain is being unmotivated about it are anxiety-and-self-loathing-riddled BS, but it's hard to turn that bit off, you know? Whereas "look it is an OFFICIAL THING and also people PICKED PROMPT DAYS" might make that particular weasel shut up. Maybe. >.>

You can adjust the photo to be a little less square and show more/be larger. (use fingers on the first area, right as you select the photo to size the photo (two fingers move together like pinching to make smaller/enlarge the area)), BEFORE you go to the next which is filters.
So yea, sometimes I lose on too large photos, but I'm mostly doing cat photos or dolls or landscape/flowers, so not too much a big deal.
I don't use Insta on my desktop.. so can't say there.
ETA: I don't use the "Stories" function, but I notice on "Stories", which is usually videos/connected shots/etc - that those are 'full phone size' and not square... so maybe that's why I'm seeing a LOT more of the Stories lately.

I agree that the Inktober box is great! I'm probably going with the Shadowscapes prompt list, which is more my speed than the official prompts, but I'm really looking forward to it. :D

Link to the Shadowscapes list? I think I'm going to at least start out with the official ones -- last year's prompts were a total no-go for me, but these are better -- but I'd like to see some other lists. :D

I've asked the person who generated the Shadowscapes list for permission to share--it's on a Discord for backers of Stephanie Pui-Mun Law's Patreon so I want to double-check first. (Although the answer is probably going to be yes, given that it's presumably fine for us all to post the artwork we make based on those prompts!)

killgently maim two birds with one stone...This is an amazing way to put it and you should do it!
And yes, I hope you get more useful thingies in the box soon!
For Instagram, you can post uncropped landscape/portrait pictures. They'll even have appear that way in peoples feeds. I think there's a limit - possibly a 16:9 ratio? - but I almost never post square pics, and I see lots of photographers who do the same. (The only exception is if you want a post with multiple pictures. Those still auto-crop to square.)

No - I'm swuun there, though I am a very sporadic user.

I like the official inktober list this year! I got derailed by catching bronchitis halfway through last October and never picked it up again. But I should - I haven't done any art for ages actually.
Both my parents and my sister keep asking me why I don't have insta. THAT'S WHY.

omg!! You're doing GREAT! go go go. :D
... but yeah, I did think about the possible impact on my h/c bingo card. And then just went for it. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL. XD
I've loved your past Inktober drawings! You have such a great style. Hopefully this will be the year we'll both finish. *fistbump*

LOL! Oh yes, I can see you loving that whumptober list!! If I was still writing, there might be a few prompts in there for me too! :D

I finally got on Insta because I also finally got a phone, but the camera's not that super and I haven't quite figured out how to upload photos I just took or do I dload them or save them or what. It seems fun and more easygoing than Twitter, tho.

But then a few months ago that stopped, so now when I post a similarly tagged artwork there are almost no likes and it feels as though it fell into a black hole. I read somewhere that they changed the algorithms so that popular instas are promoted more, and small blogs are left by the wayside and are far less likely to get noticed. The ads are a lot more frequent, as well. When I scroll through mine to look at art (all I use it for), about 1/4 of what I get is crap I have to scroll past.
For you it'd probably be different as you have a following as a webcomic artist so you can direct fans across to your insta, but I have to say it's been a dispiriting change for me and I don't plan to upload any more art there.
ETA: this explains it I think, also some tips here to make it work better for you. But reading this just reminded me how much I HATE this social media crap. I really only started using instagram to post Inktober art, so there's really no point to it for me.

But yeah, FWIW I think I'm mainly looking at it as an easy-to-use place to put art photos and an easy answer to the question I've gotten a few times, "Do you have an instagram?" (The answer is now yes!) Whether it will actually translate to getting me fresh eyeballs on my work at all ... I don't know. I really appreciate the link to the tips, though - that's super useful!
