They really look like generic fantasy from the covers! I was expecting something completely different when I started reading the first one, but they are actually unique and delightful. They remind me a lot more of modern urban fantasy than of fantasy from the era they were written in (or Zelazny's Amber books, which have a similar narrative voice and mix of contemporary and fantasy elements).
I'm currently stopped on the series because I needed to reclaim some brainspace for other projects and fandoms, but I'm really looking forward to getting back to them.
