Just keep moving, nothing to see here
The Captain America comics, you guys.
I am losing the ability to can.
There's an issue in which Bucky is out fighting crime on his birthday and being all broody and alone, and then the Avengers throw him a surprise birthday party, which is the first birthday party he's had since he turned 21 in 1945. (Sharon, regarding the birthday cake: "Don't you want to make a wish?" Bucky, in a state of dazed delight: "Nah, I'm good." a;slkfdja;sdlkjf;adslk)
There's another issue in which Bucky has to kill somebody wearing a Captain America uniform and it messes him up to the point where he becomes so self-destructive that Steve and Sam stage an intervention, which involves taking him out and getting him drunk and trying to make him talk about feelings.
(Which is followed by Sam getting almost blown up with a bomb meant for Bucky, cue worried bedside hovering and then Sam staggering out of bed despite Steve's best efforts to make him stay there because he has to go protect Bucky, dkjfja;dslkjs;ld;; these characters, I can't even.)
And in yet another issue, there's a fight between Bucky and a possessed Steve in which Bucky can't even bring himself to hit him hard enough to hurt him, so evil!Steve whacks off Bucky's mechanical hand with the edge of his shield and then is prepared to behead him with same, and Bucky just kind of lies there and waits for it to happen. (Steve wrestles back control in time, of course. Because comics.)
I keep thinking, "I'll just read a few more pages and then I'll stop." BUT THEY KEEP DOING STUFF LIKE THIS, HELP.
The comics definitely aren't great in every area; in particular Natasha is written .... strangely. It might be that the problem is I'm subconsciously expecting movie!Natasha, but she still doesn't even feel like a proper Black Widow -- she's just kind of there. Also, if you don't like Bucky, you're really not going to appreciate these, because the Brubaker run on the comics is pretty much Bucky Barnes and Friends (to the point where, as much as I am crushing on Bucky right now, I'm starting to wonder if we can't lay off Bucky's angst for awhile; I really do love ALL of them, and don't want to suffer character overload).
I really like what the comics are doing with his character, though. Movie!Bucky is still just barely taking the first step back from being completely broken, but comics!Bucky is putting himself together pretty well; he's trying so hard to be a good person and make up for his past and make Steve proud of him, even though he's still kind of a mouthy little jerk and can't quite believe that he has friends now. Fingers still crossed that the next movie follows his comics arc pretty closely (though if they have Steve's death without the corresponding resurrection, I shall be VERY CROSS).
P.S. On a completely different note, there's a total lunar eclipse tonight! It's visible mostly from North America and will be at maximum eclipse for the next hour or so. If your skies are clear, look to the southeast; it is very red and cool. It looks like a moon on an alien planet.
